How do I setup Mozilla Thunderbird?


Thunderbird is a free mail client that can be downloaded here. The following will take you through checking account settings in Thunderbird and also how to add a new account in Thunderbird. Be sure to have the following ready befoire going through the steps:

  • username and password details for accessing your mail
  • ISP mail server details


Checking Settings in Thunderbird


  1. Click on Tools > Account Settings




  2. The Account Settings window will appear:



    Ensure that your E-mail Address appears correct


  3. Click Server Settings



    Check that Server Name and User Name are correct. Server Name is your incoming mail server. Make sure that secure connection and secure authentication are not ticked.


  4. Click Outgoing Server (SMTP)




    Check that the Server Name is correct (this is your outgoing mail server).

    Make sure Use name and password is un-ticked and that Use secure connection is set to No.


Adding account in Thunderbird

  1. Click on Tools > Account Settings




  2. The follow Account Settings window appears:



    Click Add Account...


  3. The Account Wizard will appear:



    Make sure that the E-mail Account radio button is ticked and click Next


  4. Enter your Name and E-mail Address and then click Next




  5. Select the type of Incoming Server that you use (normally POP ).



    Enter your Incoming Mail server.

    Leave the Use Global Inbox checkbox checked, unless you are adding multiple accounts and would like to have a seperate set of mail folders for each account.


  6. Enter the Incoming User Name for you incoming mail server




  7. Enter an Account Name for the account




  8. Verify your details and if you need to change anything then you can click back through the wizard and make any needed changes. Click Finish to add the account.




  9. You will now be returned to Account Settings window, where you can see your newly created account.



    Click Outgoing Server (SMTP) on the left

    Enter your Server Name (outgoing mail server)

    Un-tick Use Name and Password

    Leave Use secure connection as No

    Look through the other options and set as desired. Click OK to complete the process and then you are finished.
